Jill Hawks

Jill Hawks

Jill Hawks, MS, CCC-SLP is the owner of Alpine Speech Therapy, a pediatric private practice based out of Denver, Colorado. Born and raised in rural Colorado, she pursued higher education across the border at the University of Wyoming. Jill earned both her Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at UW and started her career in a developmental preschool and early intervention program based in Cheyenne, WY. Jill made her way back to Colorado, continuing to gain experience in different settings including private practice, public schools and intensive therapy mountain and day camps. Jill brings her experiences from multiple settings, communities, and transdisciplinary teams to her own private practice now providing in-home, community-based and teletherapy services to families in the Denver metro area. Jill also has experience contracting with a rural Colorado school district that included providing teletherapy services and supervision of a speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA). Jill was appointed as the CSHA State Advocate for Reimbursement (STAR) in 2024, CSHA President-Elect for 2025 and is the current CSHA President for 2026. She looks forward to fostering strong connections that create a unified and effective network of representation across Colorado. Passionate about serving the state’s diverse communities—from rural mountain towns and the metro Front Range to the eastern plains—Jill brings a deep understanding that every region has distinct needs. This perspective drives her continued advocacy for high-quality services and meaningful support for all Coloradans.

William Thomson is a practicing Pediatric Home Health Speech-Language Pathologist at Front Range Pediatric Therapies. He earned his B.A. in Linguistics from Oakland University, completed post-baccalaureate work in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Wayne State University, and earned his M.A. in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from Michigan State University. William has a wide variety of experience, spanning multiple disciplines in the healthcare industry, as well as multiple Speech-Language Pathology settings, including schools, ICU, inpatient hospital, outpatient hospital, pediatric outpatient, and pediatric home health. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, his areas of special interest include Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Fluency, Augmentative Alternative Communication, Social Language Disorders, and Speech Sound Disorders.

He values the opportunities he has to learn from peers, patients, families, community partners, and mentors throughout the state. During his time on the board as President Elect and Vice President of Education, he would like to develop stronger connections with state associations, Colorado SLPs and Audiologists, graduate students, and community partners who have the potential to further our fields of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, while increasing educational opportunities for all health professionals. In his personal life, Will also enjoys racing cars, hiking, climbing, board games, camping, nerding out, traveling, and eating any cuisine.

 

Jessi Hogan

Jessi Hogan is the Co-Owner of Summit Speech Therapy in Northern Colorado. She began her career in Boston, MA at an acute care hospital and has since worked in many different areas of our field ranging from a mobile FEES company to a pediatric private practice. Her passion is infant/breastfeeding, pediatric feeding and adult neurological disorders. She infuses her practice with a variety of therapeutic modalities learned over the years, but always with a focus of functional progress that involves the patients whole support system. Currently working at a multidisciplinary practice has only increased her knowledge of how to treat the whole patient and reinforced her belief that when an entire team stands together to support a patient and their family – magical things can happen. Jessi served as the 2024 Treasurer and has moved into the role of President for the 2025 year. As President of CSHA, she is committed to growth, advocacy and empowering SLPs in Colorado. She is excited to advocate for meaningful changes in our field, champion legislation that supports our profession (including licensing of SLPAs in any setting), and foster a thriving community of dedicated therapists.

Maria Chisolm is a bilingual speech-language pathologist and founder of Layers Consulting, where she provides training and consultation to help clinicians and organizations deliver culturally and linguistically responsive services and build strong private practice systems. She brings experience across school-based and healthcare settings, as well as private practice ownership and management. Maria joined the CSHA Board to support a profession that reflects and effectively serves the diverse communities of Colorado. She is committed to advancing equitable access to high-quality services and strengthening professional development opportunities statewide. Through her clinical work, consulting, and professional development initiatives, Maria aims to bridge gaps between research, practice, and leadership, ensuring that clinicians and practice owners feel informed and empowered.
 

Kelsey Sipka

Kelsey Sipka is a speech language pathologist from Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned a B.S. in Communication Disorders from Central Michigan University and an M.S. in Speech Language Pathology from Bowling Green State University in 2019. After completing her education, Kelsey relocated to Denver, Colorado to begin her career. Her professional focus centers on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in the pediatric population, spanning from early intervention through adolescence. She currently works at The Learning Zone at Real Life Colorado, an immersive AAC academic program. She is excited to serve on the CSHA board of directors to assist with advancing education and advocacy within the speech language pathology field in Colorado.

Amy has been working with children and families at Children’s Hospital Colorado since 2001 and currently serves as the Associate Clinical Manager. Her areas of clinical focus include AAC, autism and parent coaching. She is certified in Hanen and the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) and has taught graduate level courses at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in AAC. Amy loves mentoring SLHS students and presents locally, nationally and internationally on autism and other topics.

Tiffany L. Barker, MS, CCC-SLP, is the owner of Sunny Speech Solutions, serving Parker, Colorado and surrounding areas. She received a Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University and a Master of Science from Texas Women’s University in Communication Disorders. Tiffany spent the first 22 years of her career in Texas public schools beginning as a direct service provider and then as Special Education Coordinator of Speech Services for a large suburban school district. While in Texas, she served on several Texas Speech Language Hearing Association (TSHA) committees including those to establish state eligibility guidelines and workload models for staffing in collaboration with the Texas Council for Special Educators (TCASE). After moving to Colorado, Tiffany decided to explore new opportunities and ultimately opened a private practice in 2018. Her practice provides staffing solutions for schools which include an SLP/SLPA model of services in addition to working directly with pediatric clients in their homes, preschools, or via teletherapy. An avid sports fan, most of Tiffany’s time away from work is spent cheering on the Texas Tech Red Raiders but she also loves to spend time traveling with her husband and reading with her granddaughters. As the Vice President of Public Policy Elect for the CSHA, Tiffany is looking forward to continuing to build on her passion of providing advocacy and growth for SLPs and SLPAs within our profession, including licensing for SLPAs outside the school setting.

Carlyn Hooper has experience working in both adult and pediatric settings.  She began her career at Craig Hospital, supporting clients in recovery from traumatic brain injury and stroke. She has continued her work with adults in the home and community setting with College Rehabilitation Partners. Carlyn has also worked in the public schools and has a passion for supporting multilingual students. She currently works as the primary speech-language pathologist for the assessment team in Littleton Public Schools. Carlyn recently completed her Doctor of Speech Language Pathology from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, with an emphasis on multicultural speech sound production treatment. She is beginning as an affiliate instructor at Metro State University, teaching undergrad courses.
Carlyn is excited to advocate for speech-language pathologists and audiologists across the state of Colorado. In her free time, Carlyn enjoys spending time with family, reading, and baking.

Linda Falk, MS, CCC-SLP has been a speech therapist for over 30 years. In that time, she has worked in a variety of settings from owning her own private pediatric practice to working at Craig Neuro-rehabilitation Hospital in Englewood, Colorado. Currently, she returned to her rural roots and hometown, working at a Critical Access Hospital in Northeastern Colorado. After being a member of CSHA for many years, Linda joined the board and will serve as the Treasurer-elect.

She is excited to be a new member of the CSHA Board of Directors to support and give back to the profession and to continue to grow as a therapist.

Caeli Romansky is a speech-language pathologist going on 15 years in the field, and is currently a part-time private practice owner and part-time school SLP. She loves the variety our field allows for us to have, as well as the curiosity and compassion that is inherent in those that end up doing this job. Caeli lives in Westminster with her husband and their very adorable dog, Crater. She love live music, yoga, and doing all the outdoor things. Caeli excited to be in this role, helping to grow our therapy community and advocacy in Colorado!

Jennie “Jen” Bjorem

Jennie Bjorem is a highly respected pediatric speech-language pathologist with over 25 years of experience and a recognized international expert in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). As the founder and CEO of Bjorem Speech® Publications, she leads a dynamic team dedicated to creating inclusive, evidence-based therapy materials that help children feel seen, supported, and successful. Jennie is also the President of the Bjorem & Bolles Apraxia Education Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and training center based in Parker, Colorado. This groundbreaking initiative is focused on equipping speech-language pathologists with the tools and confidence needed to assess, diagnose, and treat CAS through accessible, hands-on education. An engaging and sought-after public speaker, Jennie delivers impactful presentations across the U.S. and internationally. Her trainings are known for their practicality, interactivity, and deep clinical insight, always rooted in current research and her own real-world experience. Jennie maintains a small caseload of children with CAS, ensuring her work remains grounded in the day-to-day realities families face. With a passion for innovation, inclusivity, and professional collaboration, Jennie continues to push the field forward, bringing fresh ideas, joyful learning, and a deep commitment to every child’s communication journey.

 

Danielle Castle

Danielle Castle, SLPD, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist with 15+ years of experience across early intervention, school-based, and private practice settings. Originally from New York, she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in Communication Disorders from SUNY New Paltz and later completed her Doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Provo, Utah. Her doctoral research focused on coaching and adult learning principles in early intervention.

Danielle has worked in the San Francisco Bay Area, Manhattan, and the Colorado metro area, where she has practiced since 2016. Her clinical interests include supporting children with childhood apraxia of speech and autism, with a strong emphasis on family-centered, individualized care. She believes that everyone deserves a voice and finds the field both challenging and deeply rewarding.

As an active member of the Colorado Speech Hearing Association, Danielle is committed to advocating for access to high-quality speech therapy services across Colorado. She is especially passionate about growing our workforce of SLPs and improving equitable access to care for families in both rural and metro communities.

Outside of work, Danielle enjoys playing ice hockey, visiting family in New York, and spending time with her husband and dogs while exploring Colorado’s great outdoors.

Cher Heller MA, CCC-SLP, is a Speech-Language Pathologist living in Denver with 21 years of pediatric therapy experience as a school-based clinician. She has specialized experience in supporting students with significant needs, mentoring, professional advocacy and AAC. She earned her MA in Communication Disorders from the University of Northern Colorado in 2004.  Cher has worked as an SLP with Jefferson County Public Schools since 2012. Along with serving preschool through 5th grade students, for the past 13 years, Cher has supported students with complex communication needs in two center programs. While working with the center classrooms she has developed her knowledge of implementation and intervention in AAC.  Cher has fostered her love of mentoring through providing supervision and guidance to CFY and graduate masters candidates as well as SLPA interns for over 16 years. Prior to her current role, Cher was an SLP at the Tennyson Center for Children for 6 years where she gained valuable experience in trauma informed care in a facility-based program. With 9 years of service on the Jeffco district advisory team Cher has actively participated in professional advocacy helping plan training and policy protocols as a member.  Cher believes that high-quality ongoing education in speech-language pathology is essential for maintaining the integrity of evidence-based practice in the future. She is committed to helping CSHA provide relevant, accessible, applicable continuing education to SLPs in Colorado and the surrounding region.

Elizabeth (Betsy) Straka

Having been born and raised in Colorado, Betsy naturally went to the University of Colorado in Boulder where she received bachelor’s degrees in communication disorders and speech science and in psychology. She then went to Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, where she earned a Master’s of Science degree in communication disorders. Betsy established Straka Speech in 1984 and has watched it grow and grow. When not working or tending to the office, she enjoys reading, traveling, skiing and spending time with family.

Brigid Mitchel is the student liaison from CU Boulder, originally from the Western Slope of CO. After living in Brooklyn, NY for 13 years, she returned to Colorado to make a career transition to speech pathology. Her first career was in nonprofit leadership and advocacy. Her new career will allow her to have a hands-on impact every day.

Brigid is a vocalist with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from CU Boulder. As an SLP, Brigid is interested in interdisciplinary collaboration, language disorders, voice, and pediatric populations.

Lauren Erickson is a first-year graduate student at Metropolitan State University Denver studying for her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. In May 2022, Lauren earned her bachelor of science from Northern Arizona University in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Disability Studies. After she graduated, she worked as an SLPA in a rural school district in Washington then as an SLPA in Colorado the following year. She enjoys hiking, reading, crocheting, and paint by numbers. Lauren is excited to be an advocate within the SLP community and to gain insight about how to make a difference through policy.

Victoria Watson is thrilled to volunteer for the CHSA Board this year!Victoriaam originally from Kentucky but has lived in Colorado for many years and has attended three in-state universities! She is currently a graduate student at the University of Northern Colorado in the Speech Language and Audiology program. After receiving her credentials, she hopes to either stay in academia by doing research focused on language and literacy development, or work in public schools as a school-based SLP (or both!). Right now, Victoria is enjoying learning all she can in graduate school and supporting our community through our university clinic. When Victoria is not studying, she is either reading, doing a New York Times Crossword Puzzle, or taking a walk outside. She is very excited to be a part of the CHSA board!

Wendy Rich, MA CCC/SLP is a speech and language pathologist at UCH Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. She grew up in Texas, but has called Colorado home for many years. Wendy attended Texas Tech University obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science and then a Masters of Arts in Communication Disorders at the University of Cincinnati. Wendy has worked in many different settings during her career. She began her career in the schools, working 18 years with children. She has also worked in pediatric outpatient and pediatric home health. Currently she works with adults, in the in-patient rehabilitation facility at Memorial Hospital. Wendy lives in Colorado Springs with her husband. When not working, she keeps busy, hiking, biking, and cooking healthy foods.

Donna Boudreau is a speech-language pathologist in Poudre School District in Fort Collins. In addition to leading the speech and language team in PSD, she also represents Colorado on ASHA’s State Education Advocacy Leaders committee (SEALs), and is a member of CDE’s Speech Language and Advisory Committee (SLAC). Donna completed her graduate degree at the University of Connecticut and her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Boulder. She was an Associate Professor at Portland State University, and an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Northern Colorado. She formally served as the Perspectives Editor for ASHA’s Special Interest Group 1 Language and Learning. Donna’s interests focus on evidence-based practices, written language, narrative skills, and executive functioning. In addition to her passion for speech and language development and disorders and advocacy for public school SLPs, Donna loves to hike, camp, ski, travel, read, and spend time with friends and family.

Alexa Herbers is the owner of Juniper Speech & Language Therapy, a private practice in Denver, Colorado. Alexa received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Communication Science and Disorders from the University of Central Arkansas. Following graduation she moved to Denver where she has been practicing and living since. Alexa has gained experience treating a variety of pediatric communication disorders within preschools through high schools, outpatient clinic, private practice, and early intervention. In her free time, Alexa enjoys baking, playing soccer, and heading to the mountains with her golden retriever. This year Alexa is looking forward to fulfilling her role as the CSHA State Advocate for Reimbursement (StAR) while also volunteering on the ASHA Committee on Medicaid, learning how to better represent and advocate for speech pathology and audiology to insurance payers.

Megan Wagner is a lobbyist at Brandeberry McKenna Public Affairs and has been a member of the team since 2008. A graduate from Washington College in the state of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Ms. Wagner began her career as a legislative assistant for delegate Mary Roe Walkup from the Maryland House of Delegates. In 2006, Ms. Wagner worked for the Maryland Secretary of State under the term former Secretary R. Karl Aumann and former Secretary Mary D. Kane. In 2015, Ms. Wagner worked with Council of State Government’s West (CSG West) to plan a three-day transportation forum in Colorado for legislators from all over the United States. The forum provided a first hand look at recent transportation projects throughout the Denver’s metro region and a full day discussion forum with key transportation leaders. In 2017, Ms. Wagner in conjunction with the Center for Infrastructure Improvement and the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce organized a briefing on the importance of Public Private Partnerships for the Public Affairs Council and members of the Colorado General Assembly. Ms. Wagner is a graduate of Impact Denver, a leadership program administered by the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Wagner lives in Parker with her husband Ben and cat Ralph.
Positions & Duties

Board of Director (BOD) members are elected for a two-year term with the exception of the President who serves a three-year term.

BOD membership is open to all CSHA members (SLP, AUD; can be new members); no previous Board service is required for most offices, however, a candidate for President must have served on the board for at least one year. Benefits of BOD membership/participation include:

  • Direct input into continuing education offerings
  • Strategic planning for CSHA (including alternative educational offerings, web-site improvements, goals for legislative influence, etc.)
  • Ability to participate in Council of State Speech-Language-Hearing Association Presidents (CSAP)

The BOD meets meets through phone conferencing every month. There may be a few live meetings during the year at discretion of the president. Each term consists of the first year in the Elect position where the primary duties involve assisting the current office holder and the second year as the primary office holder. The President also remains on the Board as Past President for an additional year.

  • Coordinate quarterly webinars on a variety of topics with CSHA’s management company
  • Recruit presenters to provide 90-minute presentations on topics related to the field of speech language pathology and/or audiology
  • Communicate webinar information with the Communicators Director and Elect to post in monthly E-Blast and on social media platforms
  • Assist the VP of Education as need to support conference planning

Student Liaisons

Student Liaisons

The student liaisons are graduate students from each of the three universities in Colorado with programs in speech, language and hearing sciences.

  • They participate in conference meetings via telephone with the CSHA executive board, and communicate via email about current matters of the profession.
  • The student liaisons are updated on current events and news associated with CSHA.
  • They also help organize a yearly panel of professionals who meet with students from all three programs.  This panel answers questions provided by the students about their careers in the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology fields in different settings.
  • The student liaisons are the connection between Board members and current students.
  • The student liaisons learn about advocacy, and share with their peers communications regarding possible volunteer, observation, and internship opportunities.

State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEAL)

State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEALs) are appointed by ASHA recognized state speech-language hearing associations to advocate on education issues. These issues may include caseload/workload, salary supplements, and maintenance of personnel standards in school settings. SEALs can be speech-language pathologists or audiologists. The State Education Advocacy Leaders were established in 1999 under ASHA’s Priorities. The mission of the SEALs network is to enhance and perpetuate the advocacy, leadership, and clinical management skills of school-based ASHA members at the state and local levels to influence administrative and public policy decisions that affect the delivery of speech-language pathology and audiology services in school settings.

State Advocates for Medicare Policy (StAMP)
StAMP participants are appointed by ASHA recognized state speech-language-hearing associations. They advocate for Medicare coverage and reimbursement of audiology and speech-language pathology services in the states.

The StAMP representative is responsible for establishing or enhancing effective links to medical directors, consultants, and key personnel with

  • Medicare administrative contractors (MACs)
  • Medicare regional office officials
  • state health agencies (certify Medicare facilities)
  • consumer groups
  • other related professionals

State-Based Reimbursement Network (STARS)
The State Advocates for Reimbursement (STARs) are ASHA-member audiologists and speech-language pathologists who advocate in their states for improved health care coverage and reasonable reimbursement. Their targets are key decision-makers in private corporations, public agencies, and the local legislature. Examples are health care insurance executives, benefits administrators, state insurance department officials, and state congress members. STARs create advocacy strategies and share skills with the state speech-language-hearing associations that appoint them.

STARs form a true network. They link states together and to ASHA through monthly conference calls, a STARs-only e-mail discussion group, and periodic meetings. STARs are individuals who:

  • are proactive;
  • will eagerly assist colleagues and others with advice and information;
  • can help seek solutions when members face challenges to their economic viability; and
  • must count on their colleagues (you) to help them effectuate positive changes in private health insurance and Medicaid.
