Jacqueline “Lacy” Hoyer-Helms

Jacqueline “Lacy” Hoyer-Helms, MA CCC-SLP is the president and co-owner of OASIS Pediatric Therapy. OASIS Pediatric Therapy provides skilled physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and family CNA services to children in 10 Colorado counties. Lacy is also the co-founder and president of the non-profit We Help and Love Everyone (WHALE) that was established in 2022. WHALE will provide center-based respite services to children of all abilities and plans to open in late 2023 or early 2024. Lacy began her career as a speech-language pathologist 19 years ago. She received a Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2004 from the University of Northern Colorado. She was appointed by the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) as a member to the Home Care Advisory Committee in 2019. This committee represents providers and consumers of home care and hospice services in Colorado. Lacy was appointed to the State-Based Reimbursement Network (STAR) by the Colorado Speech-Language Hearing Association (CSHA) in 2022. STARs are ASHA-member audiologists and speech-language pathologists who advocate in their states for improved health care coverage and reasonable reimbursement. Lacy was honored to be chosen as the President-Elect of CSHA in 2023. Lacy testified for SB21-21 (Audiology and Speech-language Interstate Compact), HB 22-1213 (Sunset Continue Regulation Speech-language Pathologists) and assisted with the selection committee process for the Early Start Program in Colorado. Lacy regularly attends leadership conferences and participates in initiatives to advance, advocate and educate providers, legislators, and the community to improve access to quality services for all. She is driven to advance her knowledge to assist with providing access to services for the underserved community.
 

Jessi Hogan

Jessi Hogan is the Co-Owner of Summit Speech Therapy in Northern Colorado. She began her career in Boston, MA at an acute care hospital and has since worked in many different areas of our field ranging from a mobile FEES company to a pediatric private practice. Her passion is infant/breastfeeding, pediatric feeding and adult neurological disorders. She infuses her practice with a variety of therapeutic modalities learned over the years, but always with a focus of functional progress that involves the patients whole support system. Currently working at a multidisciplinary practice has only increased her knowledge of how to treat the whole patient and reinforced her belief that when an entire team stands together to support a patient and their family – magical things can happen. She will be serving as the Treasurer this year and is excited to help CSHA continue to grow financially so that we can advocate and serve all of our fellow SLPs to the best of our abilities. She is also serving as the President Elect and will be learning all about how to lead this awesome organization to make a huge impact in 2025.

Andrea Glen

Andrea Glen is a speech language pathologist at Straka Speech in Colorado Springs. She grew up as an “Army Brat,” living in Germany and across the United States. Andrea attended SUNY Geneseo, obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Human Development, and subsequently received her post baccalaureate and Master of Science degrees in Communicative Disorders through SUNY New Paltz. Andrea currently maintains her bridge certification in PROMPT, DTTC training, and enjoys working with children and adults alike. She has experience working with various diagnoses, articulation and phonological disorders, expressive and receptive language disorders, and very much enjoys holding social pragmatic and friendship groups for children and young adults. In 2022, Andrea received the Distinguished Early Career Professional Certificate of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in recognition of her impact in the areas of leadership, volunteering, and advocacy at the local, state, and national level. Andrea has served on the Colorado Speech-Language and Hearing Association (CSHA) Board of Directors since 2021. Outside of the speech room, she enjoys crafting, baking, belting songs from Broadway musicals, and discovering new hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

Emily Wilde

As a native of Iowa, Emily obtained her B.A. in Communicative Disorders and M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Northern Iowa. Emily ventured west after graduate school to Orange County, California, where she worked for eight and a half years before moving to Denver. She has worked in a variety of different settings including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, multi-disciplinary clinics, preschools, as well as in the home. She has provided intervention and assessments with a variety of different disorders, diagnoses, and a range of severity of impairments. Emily has primarily provided individualized speech-language therapy with children yet has lead small communication groups for children. Emily gained valuable experience supervising the speech department at a clinic for five years. She provided training to educate colleagues as well as supervised other speech-language pathologists, assistants, clinical fellows, and student interns. Emily values providing other clinicians and student interns hands on training to provide them with tools to help them be successful in their career. Since moving to Denver five years ago, Emily has primarily been working in early intervention providing speech-language therapy in the home and community settings and recently has been providing teletherapy. In addition, Emily is on a team that evaluates children for Autism Spectrum Disorders. Emily also enjoys participating in organizations for kids with special needs in nontraditional settings, such as a camp in the mountains as well as abroad while supervising undergraduate speech-language pathology students who provided therapy services to children in underserved communities.

Whitney Kramer, MA, CCC-SLP is a pediatric SLP from Iowa with extensive experience in AAC, childhood speech and language disorders, mentoring, and coaching. She received her BA and MA from the University of Iowa. In Iowa, Whitney was an SLP, Induction Coach, and AAC Resource Coach in the schools. She was the VP of Continuing Education of ISHA, VP of Iowa Speech Language Hearing Foundation, and a mentor for the ASHA Leadership Mentoring Program. Whitney is currently an SLP with the Cherry Creek Schools, and she also owns a small private practice, Speech with Wit. She loves working as a member of an interdisciplinary team and has found a passion for supporting other professionals grow in their practices to best support kids. As the VP of Education Elect, Whitney is excited to assist in the planning and preparations for an amazing 2024 CSHA Conference! She looks forward to engaging speakers, relevant topics, and connecting research to everyday practice.

Sandra is currently employed with the San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) as a rural school based SLP and resides in Durango, Colorado. She served on the board for the New Mexico Speech and Hearing Association (NMSHA) and was President for four years. Sandra has extensive experience in working with early childhood and school-aged children and is an Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC) specialist who has provided assistive technology evaluations and training for school-districts in New Mexico and Colorado. Given her training and experience with literacy and language difficulties, she is committed to consulting with teachers and other professionals on language-literacy services. Sandra also has broad experience with supervision and providing mentorship to SLP Clinical Fellows and graduate students. She is excited about the opportunity to serve on the CSHA board to assist with membership and supporting initiatives that advance the careers of speech-language and audiology professionals throughout our beautiful state of Colorado!

In 2013 Abby earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan and received a Fulbright Grant from the U.S. Department of State. After living in Spain for several years, she returned home to Michigan, where she earned her master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Western Michigan University. Abby has been working as a bilingual (English-Spanish) direct service provider in early intervention since 2018. She currently works on the Children’s Clinical Team at Rocky Mountain Human Services in Denver, providing intervention services and completing diagnostic and established condition evaluations. She is an endorsed Infant Mental Health Family Specialist through the Colorado Association for Infant Mental Health.

Teresa is now retired after working twenty years in the public schools in four states; Alaska, California, Colorado, and Virginia. She earned her master’s degree at Gallaudet University in 1995. Her work with students in elementary, middle and high school was rewarding and challenging. Now her days are filled with volunteer work at the local Colorado Springs District 11 schools and other free time pursuits (gardening, golf, hiking, skiing, and swimming.). In addition, she helps out with her four grandchildren who live nearby.

Jessi Hogan is the co-founder of Summit Speech Therapy in Windsor and Greeley CO. She earned her masters degree at Emerson College in Boston and moved to Colorado in 2009. Throughout her career as an SLP, she has worked in a variety of settings, from acute care hospitals to mobile MBSS/FEES to providing outpatient pediatric feeding therapy. Jessi’s therapeutic belief is that patients do not fit into nice little boxes, so using bits and pieces from a variety of treatment modalities and past experiences is often the best way to make your own unique boxes. She is very excited to become part of the CSHA board which will allow her to give back to this wonderful field of Speech Pathology and make some new connections along the way. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family in the mountains, hiking with her dogs and camping all over Colorado.

Alissa Damschroder, MA, CCC/SLP, a dedicated Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) at Oasis Pediatric Therapy, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the field. Having pursued undergraduate studies at Boston University and further honed skills at Northwestern University for graduate school, Alissa is well-versed in the nuances of pediatric speech therapy. With an impressive track record of two decades, Alissa dedicated herself to working with preschoolers in school settings, making a positive impact on their communication and development. At Oasis Pediatric Therapy, Alissa brings a warm and relatable approach to her work in early intervention, contributing to favorable outcomes for young children and families in home health settings. Beyond her therapeutic endeavors, she finds joy in family moments, cooking and baking, and exploring Colorado during her free time. Additionally, Alissa is excited to serve as the CSHA Treasurer Elect, bringing her dedication to the field into a leadership role.

Kelsey Sipka is a speech language pathologist from Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned a B.S. in Communication Disorders from Central Michigan University and an M.S. in Speech Language Pathology from Bowling Green State University in 2019. After completing her education, Kelsey relocated to Denver, Colorado to begin her career. Her professional focus centers on the pediatric population, spanning from early intervention through adolescence. She currently works with children in the home health setting, where she addresses a variety of speech and language challenges. Her special interests and experience include ASD, speech and language delays/disorders, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and social language disorders. She is excited to join the CSHA board of directors to assist with advancing education and advocacy within the speech language pathology field in Colorado.

Rylie Meeks is a practicing speech language pathologist and the Administrator and Clinical Manager of Front Range Pediatric Therapies. She earned her B.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and her M.S. in Speech Language Pathology from University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. Throughout her schooling and career, Rylie has gained experience in a variety of settings, including outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, an inpatient TBI care center, schools, and pediatric home health. After working in pediatric home health, she found that is where her true passion lies. As a speech language pathologist, her areas of special interest are AAC, autism, developmental language disorders, and social language disorders. In Rylie’s roles as Home Health Administrator and Clinical Manager, she has had the opportunity to connect with a wealth of professionals within the field of speech language pathology and other related fields. These connections have provided her with insight into areas of pediatric health and development that could benefit from advocacy, education, and improvement. Working as an administrator and clinical manager has also provided a deeper understanding of what providers require to be fulfilled and successful, which in turn leads to better outcomes for those they serve. She is excited to be part of the CSHA Board of Directors to help encourage the change necessary and protect professionals in our field, while sharing CSHA’s efforts with the public through her position as Communication Director Elect.

Marie Jetté (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical campus. She has been a voice and upper airway-specialized speech-language pathologist for more than 17 years across three different institutions where she has primarily worked in multidisciplinary clinical settings. Her research expertise is in understanding the pathophysiology of laryngeal disease, particularly refractory chronic cough and cough hypersensitivity. This year marks the third year that Marie has been webinar chair for CSHA. She enjoys being involved in SLP advocacy at the state and national level and has volunteered on numerous committees with ASHA and grassroots organizations.

Having been born and raised in Colorado, Betsy naturally went to the University of Colorado in Boulder where she received bachelor’s degrees in communication disorders and speech science and in psychology. She then went to Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, where she earned a Master’s of Science degree in communication disorders. Betsy established Straka Speech in 1984 and has watched it grow and grow. When not working or tending to the office, she enjoys reading, traveling, skiing and spending time with family.

Abi Matthews graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Colorado with a degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences in 2023 and is continuing her education at CU Boulder. She was introduced to the field of Speech-Language Pathology while working in the Intensive Care Unit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Abi has presented her research on communication disorders related to Sanfilippo Syndrome at the 2022 Colorado Speech-Language and Hearing Association convention (in Parker, CO) and 2023 American Speech-Language and Hearing Association convention (in New Orleans, LA) and continues to study this disease as part of her master’s thesis. In her free time, Abi likes to read a cozy book with her 14-year-old tabby named Thursday.

Wendy Rich, MA CCC/SLP is a speech and language pathologist at UCH Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. She grew up in Texas, but has called Colorado home for many years. Wendy attended Texas Tech University obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science and then a Masters of Arts in Communication Disorders at the University of Cincinnati. Wendy has worked in many different settings during her career. She began her career in the schools, working 18 years with children. She has also worked in pediatric outpatient and pediatric home health. Currently she works with adults, in the in-patient rehabilitation facility at Memorial Hospital. Wendy lives in Colorado Springs with her husband. When not working, she keeps busy, hiking, biking, and cooking healthy foods.

Stacy Campbell is a school-based speech-language pathologist working in the Colorado Springs area.  Stacy was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, but found her way to Colorado as a military spouse. Stacy graduated with a Bachelor of Science in the area of speech-language pathology and audiology from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in 2008 and then went on to receive her Master of Science in speech-language pathology from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 2010.  Stacy holds the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) and also holds a special services provider license through the Colorado Department of Education.  In her time as an SLP, Stacy has worked in both private practice and in the school setting, with a primary focus on the pediatric population.  Stacy enjoys working with her students and their families to support the best outcomes for their individual needs.  In addition to advocating for her students and families, Stacy also enjoys providing a voice for her profession and colleagues to improve the quality of special education services.  Outside of work, Stacy enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband and two children.

Jill Hawks is the owner of Alpine Speech Therapy, a pediatric private practice based out of Denver, Colorado. Born and raised in rural Colorado, she pursued higher education across the border at the University of Wyoming. Jill earned both her Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at UW and started her career in a developmental preschool and early intervention program based in Cheyenne, WY. Jill made her way back to Colorado, continuing to gain experience in different settings including private practice and public schools. Jill brings her experiences from multiple settings, communities, and transdisciplinary teams to her own private practice now providing in-home, community-based and teletherapy services to families in the Denver metro area. Jill also has experience contracting with a rural Colorado school district that includes providing teletherapy services and supervision of a speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA). Jill has been appointed as the CSHA State Advocate for Reimbursement (STAR). She is excited and passionate about representing the diverse makeup of the state from rural mountain towns to the metro Front Range and on to the eastern plains. Jill’s experience and understanding that each region of Colorado has its own unique needs will help her advocate for high quality services and supports for the residents of Colorado.

Megan Wagner

Megan Wagner is a lobbyist at Brandeberry McKenna Public Affairs and has been a member of the team since 2008. A graduate from Washington College in the state of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Ms. Wagner began her career as a legislative assistant for delegate Mary Roe Walkup from the Maryland House of Delegates. In 2006, Ms. Wagner worked for the Maryland Secretary of State under the term former Secretary R. Karl Aumann and former Secretary Mary D. Kane. In 2015, Ms. Wagner worked with Council of State Government’s West (CSG West) to plan a three-day transportation forum in Colorado for legislators from all over the United States. The forum provided a first hand look at recent transportation projects throughout the Denver’s metro region and a full day discussion forum with key transportation leaders. In 2017, Ms. Wagner in conjunction with the Center for Infrastructure Improvement and the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce organized a briefing on the importance of Public Private Partnerships for the Public Affairs Council and members of the Colorado General Assembly. Ms. Wagner is a graduate of Impact Denver, a leadership program administered by the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Wagner lives in Parker with her husband Ben and cat Ralph.
Positions & Duties

Board of Director (BOD) members are elected for a two-year term with the exception of the President who serves a three-year term.

BOD membership is open to all CSHA members (SLP, AUD; can be new members); no previous Board service is required for most offices, however, a candidate for President must have served on the board for at least one year. Benefits of BOD membership/participation include:

  • Direct input into continuing education offerings
  • Strategic planning for CSHA (including alternative educational offerings, web-site improvements, goals for legislative influence, etc.)
  • Ability to participate in Council of State Speech-Language-Hearing Association Presidents (CSAP)

The BOD meets meets through phone conferencing every month. There may be a few live meetings during the year at discretion of the president. Each term consists of the first year in the Elect position where the primary duties involve assisting the current office holder and the second year as the primary office holder. The President also remains on the Board as Past President for an additional year.

  • The President-Elect shall perform such other duties as from time to time may be assigned to him or her by the President or by the Board of Directors.

Student Liaisons

Student Liaisons

The student liaisons are graduate students from each of the three universities in Colorado with programs in speech, language and hearing sciences.

  • They participate in conference meetings via telephone with the CSHA executive board, and communicate via email about current matters of the profession.
  • The student liaisons are updated on current events and news associated with CSHA.
  • They also help organize a yearly panel of professionals who meet with students from all three programs.  This panel answers questions provided by the students about their careers in the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology fields in different settings.
  • The student liaisons are the connection between Board members and current students.
  • The student liaisons learn about advocacy, and share with their peers communications regarding possible volunteer, observation, and internship opportunities.

State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEAL)

State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEALs) are appointed by ASHA recognized state speech-language hearing associations to advocate on education issues. These issues may include caseload/workload, salary supplements, and maintenance of personnel standards in school settings. SEALs can be speech-language pathologists or audiologists. The State Education Advocacy Leaders were established in 1999 under ASHA’s Priorities. The mission of the SEALs network is to enhance and perpetuate the advocacy, leadership, and clinical management skills of school-based ASHA members at the state and local levels to influence administrative and public policy decisions that affect the delivery of speech-language pathology and audiology services in school settings.

State Advocates for Medicare Policy (StAMP)
StAMP participants are appointed by ASHA recognized state speech-language-hearing associations. They advocate for Medicare coverage and reimbursement of audiology and speech-language pathology services in the states.

The StAMP representative is responsible for establishing or enhancing effective links to medical directors, consultants, and key personnel with

  • Medicare administrative contractors (MACs)
  • Medicare regional office officials
  • state health agencies (certify Medicare facilities)
  • consumer groups
  • other related professionals

State-Based Reimbursement Network (STARS)
The State Advocates for Reimbursement (STARs) are ASHA-member audiologists and speech-language pathologists who advocate in their states for improved health care coverage and reasonable reimbursement. Their targets are key decision-makers in private corporations, public agencies, and the local legislature. Examples are health care insurance executives, benefits administrators, state insurance department officials, and state congress members. STARs create advocacy strategies and share skills with the state speech-language-hearing associations that appoint them.

STARs form a true network. They link states together and to ASHA through monthly conference calls, a STARs-only e-mail discussion group, and periodic meetings. STARs are individuals who:

  • are proactive;
  • will eagerly assist colleagues and others with advice and information;
  • can help seek solutions when members face challenges to their economic viability; and
  • must count on their colleagues (you) to help them effectuate positive changes in private health insurance and Medicaid.
