Why should I find a mentor?

• Learn more about the profession in general or about a specific work setting or client type
• Ask about applying to graduate schools and selecting the best school for particular career goals
• Find opportunities to shadow in different clinical settings
• Discuss what it is like to attend graduate school or discussing specific clinical cases
• Locate job opportunities, internship placements or clinical fellowship positions

Who is eligible to be a mentee?
Any undergraduate or graduate student in Colorado who is a member of CSHA is eligible to be a mentee.

How much time is required?
The duration of the mentoring relationship will depend on the goals selected by the mentor and mentee. Some dyads might meet only once to exchange information and knowledge, while others might choose to maintain an ongoing relationship. However, you should generally expect one hour per week or less to be devoted to mentorship activities.

How Do I Find a Mentor?
A list of potential mentors is available in the member center under the option Find a Mentor. Use the link below to log into the member center. It is the responsibility of the student/mentee to reach out to any potential mentors.

Mentors

We are looking for CSHA members who are interested in volunteering to serve as mentors for undergraduate and graduate students at University of Colorado Boulder, University of Northern Colorado and Metropolitan State University.

Why should I be a mentor?
You have the opportunity to shape the future of an audiologist or speech pathologist. Sharing your knowledge, past experiences and providing a network of support to students in the profession is invaluable.

Who is eligible to serve as a mentor?
Any practicing speech-language pathologist or audiologist who is a CSHA member is eligible to serve as a mentor.

How will my information be shared with students?
Student CSHA members will be able to search for available mentors by specialty area and/or work setting in the Members Only section of the CSHA website. Students are responsible for contacting a potential mentor and initiating a mentoring relationship.

Will CSHA be involved in my mentoring relationship?
No, it is the responsibility of the mentor and mentee to establish the goals of the mentoring relationship and mutually decide the frequency, duration and manner of communication.

Will I have an opportunity to meet my student mentee?
Yes, at the annual CSHA Conference there will be an opportunity for mentors and mentees to meet.

What are the expectations of the mentoring relationship?

• Establishing the goals or objectives of the mentoring connection
• Selecting steps required to meet those goals and objectives
• Deciding on frequency and mode of communication between the mentor and mentee
• Determining if the goals and objectives have been met
• It is the responsibility of the mentor and mentee to keep sensitive information confidential and protected

How can I become a Mentor?
Sign up by selecting Update/Edit Your Account Information in the Member Center. Log in using the link below and request to be added to the list of mentor volunteers (final drop box at the end of your profile). Remember to indicate a specialty area. Detailed instructions.
