Abstract:  With the rise of knowledge of the Neurodiversity Movement in speech-language discourse, clinicians find themselves tasked to affirm their autistic students' identities through creative, compassionate, and patient speech-language practice. Simultaneously, educator, clinician, and student burnout post the Covid-19 Pandemic is rampant, making such a radical shift in practice and outcomes difficult to realistically obtain. In this presentation, Rachel Dorsey, MS, CCC-SLP will examine the roles of mental and sensory wellbeing in the functional outcomes for autistic clients. Discussion will focus on the complexities and nuances of real life clinical decision-making in several case studies, ultimately landing on goals that are both client and clinician-affirming.

Presenter Information: 
Rachel Dorsey, MS, CCC-SLP (she/her), is an autistic speech-language pathologist with experience in early intervention, the public schools and private practice. She is the owner of Rachel Dorsey: Autistic SLP, LLC. where she provides therapeutic services to autistic clients of all ages. Rachel provides consultations and professional developments regarding language development, cognitive flexibility and socioemotional support for the autistic population throughout the United States and internationally. She was an invited speaker in the 2021 ASHA Convention, the 2022 ASHA Schools Connect Conference, the 2023 ASHA Private Practice Conference and was published in the ASHA Leader and featured in the ASHA Voices Podcast.

• Analyze how an Autistic child’s mental health impacts selection of an attainable goal.
• Identify a meaningful targeted skill for a case study client given their current skills and challenges.
