Abstract: Cognitive-communication disorders often go undiagnosed in the acute care setting. This presentation will help improve functional assessment and treatment of cognitive-communication disorders amongst the TBI population in acute care settings.

Learner outcomes

After this presentation, participants will be able to….

  • List four ANCDS standardized assessments, publisher and SLP-recommended, to evaluate and identify cognitive communication impairments amongst the TBI population in acute care settings.
  • Describe at least two patient centered informal assessment techniques or strategies for patients following traumatic brain injuries in the acute care setting.
  • Name three ways TBI related memory impairments differ from other amnestic memory disorders and explain at least 3 ways to functionally assess TBI related memory impairments in acute care settings

Time-Ordered Agenda

  • 15 minutes: Introduction to assessment of assessment of young adult and adult aged patients following a mild-severe TBI in an acute care setting.
  • 15 minutes: Present and review what ANCDS is and the ANCDS standardized assessments, publisher and SLP-recommended table (screen share) for review and explanation of assessments and pros/cons of these assessments in an acute care setting.
  • 30 minutes: Discuss literature review from EBP sources citing differences between TBI related memory impairments differ from other amnestic memory disorders. I will provide functional examples in an acute care setting and examples highlighted in the literature, including methodology used to determine the differences.
  • 15 minutes: Discuss and review functional, person-centered assessment vs. standardized assessment of cognitive communication impairments in the TBI population and how to utilize both methods for a comprehensive evaluation of patients in an acute care setting.
